The “East Cape” (there is no Spanish name for the area) is an area of Baja Sur that stretches (approximately) from just east of San Jose del Cabo to the Sea of Cortez towns of Los Barriles and Rancho Buena Vista.  For as long as one can remember, the area has been popular for fishing enthusiasts; however, it has only been within the past few years that “others” have begun to find the area.  Lovers of Yellowtail, Roosterfish and Tuna came and went without spreading the word to non-fishing tourists.  With the explosive tourist and retirement growth of Los Cabos and its continued expansion eastward to San Jose del Cabo, it was only a mater of time until the “East Cape” was discovered anew. 

This “discovery” requires a bit of determination and patience. If you want to drive the coast from San Jose del Cabo to Los Barriles you’ll find yourself on a single road that is not up to the standards of quick-visiting tourists; but, off-road enthusiasts will love it!  Now is a great time to do it, because development is coming – and fast!

…Cabo Pulmo National Marine Park, which protects the only living reef in North America – what a nature lover’s treat!  To get there, you need only a minimum amount of Dundee-Outback in you; but even so, you will have to experience about 20 miles of dirt road to reach Cabo Pulmo.  When you get there, you will find about 100 to 200 permanent residents, depending upon the time of the year you arrive.  If you love to dive, windsurf, kayak, or just enjoy beautiful waters, this is the place to be!

… or, what about the East Cape’s beautiful mountains, with gushing waterfalls and hot springs? During your travels, mission and numerous plantations will seeming appear from nowhere.  You can also step back in time, say 15,000 years or more, and experience Indian cave paintings or see the prehistoric “boulder paintings.”
